I have now been in the Legal Expense’s Insurance (LEI) and Litigation Funding market for some 35 years, making me both a veteran of the class, and subject matter expert.

From Underwriting Clerk to Underwriting Director and business owner, I have had the fortune of holding many different and varied job roles throughout my career.

​

Starting out at DAS Legal Expenses Insurance back in 1988, when there was less than 50 staff in total, I progressed through the ranks from Junior Clerk to Underwriter, Senior Underwriter to Operations Manager, Group Underwriting Manager to Group ATE & Special Risks Manager, and ultimately reaching Executive Manager upon departure.

Further and ongoing education has been an important strategy of mine throughout my career, and I gained the following academic qualifications along the way.

• Chartered Insurer

• FCII, Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

With both in depth BTE (Before the Event) and ATE (After the Event) expert knowledge, I have been asked to contribute to various market reports, research documents, and sit on numerous working party groups, including the Civil Justice Council, Ministry of Justice, Law Society, MASS, APIL, Westminster Policy Forum and I was a member of the Jackson LASPO implementation group.

I was the key claimant expert witness in the well-known Rogers v Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council test case for ATE premium recovery (a game changer at the time) and have provided many more expert witness statements for other premium challenges along the way.

​

More recently, I have held the position of Underwriting Director and Board Director for both an established MGA and new start-up MGA, as well as Head of Legal Expenses & Ancillaries insurance.

​

Having held senior roles as both a risk taker (Insurer) and MGA (Managing General Agent) I have a unique insight into the detailed workings from both business systems perspectives.

​

I was also a Defined Benefit pension scheme trustee Chairman, and Non-Executive Director and Vice Chairman of the CLSB (Cost Lawyers Standard Board).

 

Consulting

​

Whilst consulting I have had the opportunity of getting involved with many exciting projects such as.

• Providing help and advice for several litigation funding projects with litigation finance companies.

• Helping insurers and MGAs develop and scope new products and business lines.

• Creating business plans for both new market entry and new product entry.

• Provide underwriting guidance on commercial ATE risks.

• Act as interim underwriter for both BTE & ATE risks.

• Assist with capacity search for LEI risks both primary and reinsurance.

• Explored alternative risk mitigation vehicles such as Insurance Captives & PCC's
